The Crucifixion
10 1/2" X 14"
The glowing Aunt jemima/Mammy form around Oprah seems to draw everyone's attention in such a way that I find a comment necessary. On one side, not digging too deeply, this symbol can obviously be taken negatively but, from another viewpoint, the Mammy / Aunt Jemima is thought to represent a macumbo priestess, a symbol of spiritual presence, a community leader, a woman of strength and authority.
I refer to this as The Crucifixion. Here we have a thin Oprah being crucified on a cross of steer horns. Oprah is wearing a long red skirt with a sequined bib-overall top. Her accessories include lavender evening gloves and a red bandanna. The lavender gloves are there for whimsy. Without being to specific, as I like the viewer to draw his or her own conclusions, the rest of her outfit refers to her out-there personality, the struggles indigenous with her race, and her rise from less to more.

From a tongue in cheek point of view the glowing form can also stand for Oprah's struggle with her own weight. Superimposed over a famous black figure such as Oprah, it can also show the long struggle faced by black women in our society for respect and recognition.
