Client's choice with some alterations. This is a digital "sketch" and not the painting which is still in progress.
Just when it had been decided that for the next few years, no more new South Shore Millennium posters would be commissioned, a unique and nostalgic idea was presented - Danceland. Could we create a poster of a Popular and Famous, Big Band era Ballroom that had graced the Hammond shore of Lake Michigan but that no longer exists? The answer was apparently How could we not document such a beloved memory. I was chosen by the clients, Marcia Madura Kozlowski and Dr. Daniel Kozlowski, to be the artist of this new poster.
The Kozlowski's had several vintage Danceland posters and numerous old newspaper clippings of this memorable ballroom but only two very small, old, damaged photos of the all important interior. My first task was to enhance and pretty much recreate the ballroom interior from these two photos. Luckily, Mrs. Kozlowski remembered important details from her childhood such as what materials things were made of and what colors were used. With this information I was able to recreate two different views of the ballroom interior that could be used as the focus for the poster sketches.
The Danceland banner and deco information box were used often in the vintage posters and we decided to use them in the new poster as well. We were bringing Danceland into the future but grounding it in it's past.
