Progress 1
After the image is drawn in with pencil and sprayed with a thin coat of a workable fix to prevent smudging, I begin painting/blocking-in large areas of the canvas with oils. I usually start at the top and work down to avoid accidentally resting my hand in wet paint. I've never gotten the hang of using the ball on the end of a stick ( Mahlstick) to steady my hand. This is the first time that I have included the type in this stage of the painting process for prior South Shore Posters. |
|
I decided to begin by painting only the basic ballroom background, leaving more detailed elements such as the band, the dancers and the chandeliers and other lighting fixtures for later. When I block-in an area I do so including as much detail and lighting effects as I can. Later, after the canvas has been covered with paint, I will go back and alter details and lighting with layered transparencies. |
