Madura's DANCELAND

"Indiana's Most Beautiful Ballroom" with the one and only spacious, "spring cushion" dance floor.

Digital photograph showing the painting progress on Bruce Cegur's newest South Shore Poster, Madura's Danceland. Progress 1

After the image is drawn in with pencil and sprayed with a thin coat of a workable fix to prevent smudging, I begin painting/blocking-in large areas of the canvas with oils. I usually start at the top and work down to avoid accidentally resting my hand in wet paint. I've never gotten the hang of using the ball on the end of a stick ( Mahlstick) to steady my hand.

This is the first time that I have included the type in this stage of the painting process for prior South Shore Posters.

I decided to begin by painting only the basic ballroom background, leaving more detailed elements such as the band, the dancers and the chandeliers and other lighting fixtures for later. When I block-in an area I do so including as much detail and lighting effects as I can. Later, after the canvas has been covered with paint, I will go back and alter details and lighting with layered transparencies.
