Madura's DANCELAND

After everything was completely dry, I painted in the border colors and the letters over several weeks. The purple border alone took a little over two weeks to dry. I couldn't work on the letters included in that color field until it was sufficiently dry. Painting letters in oil, suitable for reproduction, is extremely taxing on the patients. Much of the lettering and border colors had to be gone over twice.

I don't know why I hadn't thought of it before but, if I receive another commission of this type in the future, I will use alkyds for the borders and copy rather than slow drying oils. That would cut out about a month of drying time.

DETAIL

After the borders and lettering was finished, I added finishing details to the band, stage and ballroom.

The last thing I worked on before I signed my name was the dancing couples. There was more work to be done on the faces as well as the darks and highlights of the clothing.
