PORTAGE - The bridge over Salt Creek along the Prairie Duneland Trail is the latest image of Northwest Indiana being depicted through the timeless tradition of South Shore posters.

The original artwork, created by Hammond artist Bruce A. Cegur, was unveiled Thursday afternoon during the Greater Portage Chamber of Commerce's monthly luncheon.

"I'm honored to be part of this project," said Cegur.

This is Cegur's fifth poster for the series and the 40ieth in the series of new posters sponsored by the

Northwest Indiana Forum, Cegur also created posters for Hammond, Hobart, Whiteco and of the old Lake county Courthouse. His next will be for the city of LaPorte.

The idea behind the series, said Susan Zlavic of the Northwest Indiana Forum, is to promote the quality of life in the region.

"We want to get Chicago people interested in what we have out this way," added Portage Park Department Superintendent Carl Fisher.

Cegur agreed. Born and raised in Hammond, he said he moved to Chicago for a time, but found his way back to his roots. He says he doesn't know why more people aren't finding their way across the border.

"Northwest Indiana is not all industry like people think it is," said Cegur.

Cegur, who autographed copies of the posters purchased after the luncheon,

said he snapped 150 to 200 photographs of the scene, put them on his computer and blended them together.

"With the aid of new technology, I am able to put together new views, sketches if you will," he said. From the chosen view, Cegur completes the painting from which the posters are reproduced.

The original canvas painting will hang in Portage City Hall, Fisher said. Three hundred posters will be available for sale for $20 each. One half of the proceeds will go to the Portage Park Foundation and the other half will be placed in the park department's capital projects fund. The posters will be available through the park department offices at Woodland Park.
